Social Media Meltdown of the Week

THIS WEEK’s PERP:

Tucker Carlson, Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Caller, Conservative Pundit

THE FACTS:

Award-winning journalist and conservative pundit engages in offensive sexist Twitter exchange with staff reporter Patrick Howley about Buzzfeed reporter Rosie Gray.  Clumsy attempt to delete Tweets before universe finds out.  Too late.

THE INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE:

CARLSON TWEET

THE FALLOUT:

A reporter from the Huffington Post – Ryan Reilly – alerted Carlson that he had taken screenshots of the offensive Tweets just before they were deleted.  Carlson presumably then forced Howley to delete his Twitter account and apologize to Gray a couple of hours after the incident.  Carlson issued an apology too.

THE LESSON:

ANYTHING you post on social media will follow you for the rest of your natural born life.  Deleting Tweets and offensive posts after the fact is a sad cosmetic solution for what never should have been done in the first place, and it only makes the infraction worse because people know how desperate you were to cover it up.
